About

Niels Albers is a Dutch artist and designer based in Amsterdam. In 2010, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Audio-Visual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. After obtaining a Master of Interior Architecture at the Sandberg Institute in 2018, he became one of the founders of Fabulous Future, a collective engaged in combining research, development, and construction of spaces, events, and situations.

Albers’ artwork is always a response to the environment. By reflecting on the existing and what is given, he makes architectural interventions, striving to find the right balance between integrating and contrasting. Engaged in research into the relationship between humans, animals, and other life forms, he shows a genuine concern for the impact of the human species on our planet’s ecosystem. His fascination with origins, games, maps, and routes results in a practice where anthropocentric concerns are mixed with an architectural fetish.

With his work and interventions, he seeks to arouse the curiosity of the viewer, addressing things that are often taken for granted. Drawing inspiration from nature and its beautiful and extraordinary life forms, he strives to work nature-inclusive and mindful of all life forms. His artworks invite physical interaction — they are there to climb on, sit on, touch, experience, use, sometimes also to eat, and especially to play with.

Beyond their sculptural qualities, his creations respond to specific contexts, often carrying layered social and political significance. His work has been presented at many international exhibitions such as Manifesta15 (Barcelona, Spain), Kunstenfestival Watou (Watou, Belgium), and IJsselbiënnale (Deventer, NL).
